Tapestry Study Group

Last Saturday was our second meeting of the Tulsa Handweavers tapestry study group. We had a pretty good crowd. Some of us brought looms and projects that were underway.

Our main goal for the day was to give people a chance to make their own copper pipe frame loom for tapestry weaving and to talk about warping those looms . We published several informational files about making the looms and warping them along with a basic sett chart for cotton seine twine. If you would like to see them go to www.tulsahandweaversguild.org and click on the study group. They should be available for a couple of months there.

It was also an opportunity to get together, talk tapestry and learn from each other.

I demonstrated a few things like cutting the copper pipe, and fitting the pieces together.

The written files that were available prior to the meeting seemed to make the process go very smoothly.

Some team work was required!

Some elbow grease was needed too!

Of course with this group it is never all work and no play.

After the loom building I demonstrated warping the looms...

and preparing them for weaving.

Here is mine set up on my sketch box easel and I am talking about headers and half hitches.

At the end of the day, the satisfaction of a job well done was apparent everywhere.

  2. Janette,
Sorry for the deleted comment - I realized after posting it that I had neglected to include something that had I intended to say, so I am trying again. We all have our "gateway" looms now and are ready to start a new adventure. Whenever we start something new, it's easy to get worried that we aren't talented enough to do well in our newly-chosen interest. Brenda Hoddinott, who offers a free, online drawing course, offers this definition:

“Talent is the self-discovery and acknowledgement that you possess the interest and motivation needed to become exceptional in a specific area.”

That encouraged me, so I hope it encourages others! Thank you for acknowledging our talent! And I am SO glad you caught Karin in her PINK shirt!!!

    1. Actually it was Lynn that captured Karin in her pink shirt and thanks to Lynn I also had some pictures of myself to offer.

I absolutely LOVE that quote. Thanks for sharing it! I think I need to include it in my sketchbook.
